Teacher & Choreographer

As both a dancer and a teacher, Riccardo Passera believes that movement is a universal language that connects us all — a powerful tool for self-discovery and a catalyst for creative expression. His journey through dance, spanning across cultures from Italy to the Caribbean, has instilled in him a deep understanding of the transformative power of movement.

Riccardo brings this perspective to his teaching and choreography, where he nurtures the artist within every student and performer. As a Teaching Artist with Notes In Motion’s Education Ensemble, he has cultivated an environment where curiosity, confidence, and creativity can thrive. For Riccardo, teaching is more than technique; it’s about guiding dancers to tap into their own voices, unlocking their fullest potential both in and out of the studio.

Riccardo’s approach to dance and choreography has been deeply enriched by his collaboration with Lino Villa, a visionary in modern contemporary choreography and artistic direction. Villa’s work, which emphasizes using dancers not as vehicles, but as the protagonists in communicating profound messages and emotions, deeply resonated with Riccardo. This philosophy has shaped Riccardo’s own approach, pushing him to cultivate an environment where dancers are empowered to express their true selves. In working alongside Villa, Riccardo learned to blend technique with emotional storytelling, ensuring that every performance has a rich, layered narrative.

Equally influential in Riccardo’s artistic development has been his work with Freddie Moore, the celebrated Rehearsal Director for the Ailey Student Performance Group (ASPG). Moore’s vast experience in the Horton Technique and his renowned career as a choreographer and teacher have provided Riccardo with a deeper understanding of the importance of grounding technique in artistry. Riccardo has drawn from Moore’s approach of nurturing dancers as complete artists, encouraging them not only to perfect their craft but to embrace their individuality and creative expression. Through this collaboration, Riccardo continues to evolve his own teaching and choreography, ensuring that his students leave each class with a stronger sense of purpose and a greater connection to their movement.

As a choreographer, Riccardo seeks to create works that are visually compelling and emotionally resonant. His choreography is a reflection of his life — rich with diverse influences, personal experiences, and an unwavering belief in the power of dance to tell stories and build community. Whether creating a performance for the stage or guiding a dancer’s individual journey, Riccardo approaches each moment with the same passion: to inspire, elevate, and connect.
